The Sky Is Not Falling; Your Job Is Probably Safe
This title is not mine, but was written by Dawn Rivers Baker, the award-winning journalist behind The MicroEnterprise Journal, an online business newsweekly.
In the article (full link follows), she quoted an unemployment statistic that surprised me: in the Great Depression, “only” 24% were unemployed. Now I put the number in quotation marks because I’m sure that the families that were affected didn’t think that the unemployment rate was low, and I don’t want to belittle the suffering that existed.
But I have to admit, I expected it to be more. Maybe it was those movies I saw as a kid, with the soup kitchen and dust bowl scenes. So Dawn’s reminder helps put things in perspective. Especially since the media is full of inferences or references to a looming “Second Great Depression”.
Another reminder to not let external forces dictate your mindset.
