The cost of a messy desk

Most entrepreneurs that I know have a hard time keeping up with the paperwork. It gets piled up and they can’t find a clean surface on their desk. That’s when they start piling the stuff on the floor, until they can’t take it anymore. Then they sometimes throw everything in a box, which of course means it’s all lost for ever.

I had my “I can’t take it anymore” moment yesterday. I had retrieved an invoice from its proper file (yes!) because I had to provide it to two other parties. I didn’t deal with it right away and when I tried to get back to it, I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Here I was, the coach who helps entrepreneurs keep their perspective and their stress down, being totally frustrated and flustered. At least I knew I wasn’t at my most resourceful and didn’t engage with anyone else until I had regained my composure.

The sane part of me was observing my emotions, amazed at how such a little thing was throwing me off. Not my usual self at all!

The missing invoice was the straw that threw the camel into overwhelm. I’d been noticing how messy my work space was. It was bothering me but I figured I’d deal with it later when I had more time.

Well now I had to deal with it; I rifled through the pile twice looking for the invoice. When I still didn’t find it I decided to actually file the stuff away in the hope the invoice would be uncovered. When I was done, I couldn’t believe how pleased I was at having a neat desk again. I mean, I’m not that visual a person so I didn’t think it mattered to me that much.

Then I remembered: I’m an energy person and clutter is a major energy drainer. Since it builds up over time, I didn’t spot how bothered I was by it until the missing invoice drama.

It was a lot more pleasant to sit at my clean orderly desk today; my productivity went up as did my inspiration!

Hope I stay there for a while.

P.S. I did find my invoice; it had slipped into a box when I was playing chase with the cats.
