motivation
What people really want, and it’s not what you might think
Money? Power? Fame? Love?
All good guesses, but that’s not what the studies say.
What people really want is to feel like they matter.
That’s what’s behind the craving for power, money, fame and love; wanting to feel important.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t realize the kind of importance that would really satisfy us. We get closer to grasping [...]
Thoughts about fearful thoughts
Most of us who have been involved in personal and/or spiritual growth believe that we are responsible for our lives and for our thoughts.
We also believe that our thoughts are powerful factors in determining how our lives unfold. Where we put our attention on, expands. Think fearful thoughts, and you get more fear. So think [...]
Respect; the universal motivator
I was co-presenter at a workshop on how to prevent conflict in the workplace, and part of the material was talking about how people have 4 basic motivators; they want:
Their authority respected
To be recognized for work well-done
To feel a sense of belonging
Clarity about what’s expected of them
We want all of these, but one will usually [...]
No wonder it’s hard to change
As a living being, we have amazingly powerful survival instincts, and they don’t like change because it represents the unknown.
Unknown means unproven which may mean danger, who knows? So our instinct thinks we’re better off to stay the way we are.
But eating a healthier diet (for example) is good for me, not a threat!
Never mind [...]
Did you break your New Year’s resolution yet?
A lot of people have by now; many didn’t even wait a day. And I know that’s not a great surprise, after all, we all chuckle knowingly over the New Year’s resolution jokes.
So why can’t you, like most people, keep your promise to yourself?
You don’t believe you can do it
After all, you have lots of [...]
What Do People Want Most of All?
They want to be recognized and accepted for who they really are.
Really? What about all those who are after more money and more power. Isn’t that what motivates most of the world?
It would seem so, but let’s look at it more closely.
What does money bring us?
Security, freedom, the ability to do what we want, [...]
How to get more freedom on the job
Most of us feel like we can’t buck the trend in our work cultures. For example, there is no way we could take time for exercise at lunch if everyone else is eating at their desks. We would be labelled as “slackers” and be blackballed when it comes to promotions. So we let our health [...]
Is it possible to act purposefully in the corporate world?
My last two posts were recollections of times when I and another exec. acted a little blindly to further the company’s interests, pushing ourselves or others beyond what should have been expected. At the time, we both thought we were being good corporate warriors worthy of praise, to which we would have replied:”Just doing my job.”
Fact is, most of us didn’t [...]
How many times did you risk too much to go to work?
We’ve had a major snow storm here, and I’m sitting here so grateful for modern technology. I’ve had a productive day despite (or maybe because of) being housebound.
I remember the old days, when I would drive in horrid conditions to get to the office. Many of us have a strong work ethic, and we prize [...]
Post retirement awakening
I was biking one summer and ran into an ex-colleague, and despite the passing years, we recognized each other. He had been the head of his region in our large corporation and had devoted his career to the place. He was one of the lucky ones who looked as good as he had ten years [...]
