7 Reasons why you might be more successful as an entrepreneur than in your previous jobs
I used to think that people were either entrepreneurs or “career” types. Somehow, people knew early on whether they wanted to be their own bosses; it was a choice driven by personality characteristics.
But lately, the lines have blurred, maybe because the world is changing. So I thought I’d compile a list of reasons why you might not have been at your best when you worked for a company or someone else:
- You did not enjoy engaging in office politics but couldn’t avoid its impact, and the company or office culture had different values than your own so your heart couldn’t be fully in it
- A lot of your time was spent on appearances rather than substance. For example, having to make a project look good when you thought it should be abandoned, or creating an extensive presentation to impress other decision makers
- As a subset of that, you wasted a lot of time in meetings that weren’t helpful to your work
- Most of your energy went into managing the bureaucracy, rather than in making money or customer service.
- You observed a lack of connection between good work and recognition, which was totally disheartening
- You didn’t have the power to truly do your work the way it should be done. That applies to middle and upper management as well.
- The emphasis was on short-term results to the detriment of long-term viability as well as the impact on society, the environment, and individual lives.
Sometimes we think that people who were a little, shall we say, subdued in their jobs are not good candidates for being their own bosses; they don’t understand what it takes to run a business! Well, maybe they didn’t completely buy the way their employers ran their business.
Does that describe you? If so, you might find success at a business that is run the way you see things.

So true… I have to say I answered yes to all 7 points, especially 3 and 5 for me. That’s why I am on my own now and much happier for it. I am grateful that I can do what I do on my own, it take’s a little more creativity but that’s a positive.
